Bath Towel Color Fastness: Tips to Prevent Fading After Washing

　　There is nothing more frustrating than a vibrant new towel turning dull after a few washes. Color fastness depends on the dye type and how you care for the fabric.

　　Understanding the Dye

　　Reactive Dyes: Chemically bond with the cotton fibers. These have the best wash-fastness but are more expensive.

　　Direct/Vat Dyes: Sit inside the fiber. These are prone to bleeding in hot water. Check the label: if it says "wash separately," it likely uses direct dye.

　　Washing Best Practices

　　Turn Inside Out: Friction against the metal drum and other items wears down the surface color. Turning the towel inside out protects the visible side.

　　Cold to Warm Water: Hot water (above 40°C/104°F) opens up cotton fibers and releases dye molecules. Use cold or warm water (30°C) to lock the dye in.

　　Mild Detergent: Harsh chemicals and bleach strip color. Use a gentle, color-safe detergent.

　　Avoid Over-Drying: High heat in the dryer can "bake" the remaining dye, making it brittle and prone to flaking off. Air drying is best; if using a dryer, use the low-heat tumble setting.

　　The Vinegar Trick

　　For the first wash, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. The acid helps set the dye, acting as a mordant to keep the color vibrant for longer.
